Design, When Everybody Designs - Ezio Manzini

Ezio Manzini, well-known designer, design philosopher and member of Srishti’s International Advisory Board launched his latest book Design, When Everybody Designs from the MIT Press at Bangalore on November 29, 2015. Speaking at the event, Prof. Manzini said that the world is going through a period of crisis, which is experienced as crisis events such as financial, environmental, social, political and others. Design as a discipline and profession rooted in industrial modernity of mass production of objects will not be able to respond with adequate solutions to resolve this crisis. Therefore it is necessary for design as well as designer to radically rethink their position. According to professor Manzini such a shift is already underway, which can be glanced in the type of projects executed in World Design Capital 2014, Cape Town, South Africa and recent books published on design.

Social Innovation and Co-Design are key concepts in Professor Manzini’s thinking about design. For him, social innovation is the creative responses of the community to commonly perceived needs, requirements and social good. Co-Design is the new design process that brings together all actors and wherein the designer is an active facilitator that steers the process in right direction. Professor Manzini cited many examples from different parts of the globe that implemented these concepts for generating resilient design solutions.

Responding to a question from the audience, professor Manzini said that India is at a unique and advantages position because the living traditions, modernity and use of advanced technology exist in the same space opening up novel possibilities for resilient and sustainable design solutions to the crisis we are experiencing in the world.
