Editorial Portraits of SMI Faculty Members. A class project.
As part of a unit called Illustration Across Media, mentored by Kavita Arvind, students created editorial portraits of faculty members for a New Yorker-style cover exploring Art and Design Education in India. Through research, interviews and the study of illustrators’ visual languages, they used colour, composition and visual metaphor to develop individual interpretations that went beyond likeness, connecting each portrait to the person’s practice and perspective.

Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design and Technology (SMI)—formerly known as Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology—has pioneered transdisciplinary art and design pedagogy for nearly three decades. Srishti educates artists, designers and practitioners with an aim to inspire and encourage creativity. Integrating practice, performance, research and experimental pedagogy has enabled Srishti students always to remain ahead of the curve.

SMI offers a unique practice-based approach that blends design thinking, problem-solving, project-oriented, and place-based learning with new digital technologies. Students of Srishti collaborate and intern with a large variety of industries during their education, with art and design contexts in India and around the globe, with international companies, and also within urban and rural localities to understand one’s role in improving the social conditions of life. With a faculty of distinguished professionals and academicians, an experimental curriculum, and an emphasis on critical thinking, Srishti celebrates “the chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star” (Friedrich Nietzsche).

This new institute has become a part of MAHE’s off-campus (branch campus) at Bengaluru. MAHE is an institution recognised as Institute of Eminence by the Government of India. This shall provide Srishti Manipal with a world class infrastructure in the near future and increased access to international opportunities via a University’s global networks….
